Huawei is preparing its next big release in the smartphone world – expected to be the Mate 70, a version that’s rumored to be even more powerful than the legendary Mate 60 from last year. On social media platform Weibo on November 4th, Richard Yu, President of Huawei’s Consumer Business Group, teased: “The strongest Mate in history. See you in November!”

Although the official name and release date have not been revealed, based on Huawei’s familiar naming conventions, it is likely that this will be the Mate 70, a successor to the Mate 60. Back in August 2023, Huawei made waves in the market with the Mate 60, its first 5G smartphone since the U.S. imposed sanctions, blocking access to Western chip sources. Notably, the Mate 60 wasn’t just a technological product but also a symbol of patriotism, as Huawei used a 7nm processor made by SMIC, a domestic Chinese company. This success allowed Huawei to make a strong comeback in the domestic market, generating significant demand.
After the Mate 60, Huawei launched other impressive products like the Pura 70 and the Mate XT, a foldable phone, which generated millions of pre-orders even before hitting store shelves. As a result, the latest IDC report shows that Huawei’s smartphone sales in China surged by 42% in Q3 2024 compared to the same period last year, capturing 15.3% of the market share – a remarkable achievement.
According to sources from Gizchina, the Mate 70 is expected to be fully equipped with the advanced Kirin 9100 chip, manufactured on SMIC’s 5nm process, and will run on HarmonyOS 5.0 – Huawei’s proprietary operating system, continuing its efforts to reduce dependence on Android. Additionally, sources from SCMP reveal that Huawei is aiming for a new sales “hit,” with a 50% increase in component orders compared to the Mate 60 and preparing over one million Mate 70 units for the first batch.

Analysts believe that Huawei is focusing its efforts on regaining its position in the premium smartphone segment. Remember, before being impacted by the U.S. sanctions in 2019, Huawei was competing on par with Samsung and Apple in terms of global sales. Will the Mate 70 help them continue that journey? November will provide the answer.
